Wednesdays with Wade "Week 6 in Kabul"

Well I have reached the 6 week mark and am a few days away from being at the 2 months since I left home. This has been a sobering week with the successful completion of the Afghan elections, but unfortunately, it was coupled with the loss of 9 American soldiers and sailors yesterday. I was able to take comfort in the fact that the casualty reports that I saw, listed each individual as a Christian.

On most days, many of us at this headquarters are frustrated about the politics and retardation of an Army higher headquarters. We hope that in the end, we are doing something that provides the warfighter's stationed all over this country the ability to achieve success, which will ulitimately get everyone home as soon as possible. After being here for 6 weeks, I figured that I had to put some serious things into the blog, since it is a combat deployment after all. Even though on most days, it feels like I am in the movie "Groundhog day".

Out of the Mouth of Babes...

The other day, on the way to the post office, Luke said ...
"Mom, God is in our home."

I smiled and said, "That's right...he is in our home and in our hearts; he is everywhere."

"No, no...he's not!
He is at our home...he's a rock!!"

Laughing, I said, "Oh, you mean he is OUR rock??"

"Oh yeah, I forgot."

Oh, Sweet Boy, thanks for the reminder, and Let me never forget ...

Find rest; O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

Wednesdays with Wade "Week 5 in Kabul"

I can't believe that I am already up to week 5.  By the time I write the blog next week, I will be over the 25% mark.  As promised, this week I am going to focus in on the chow hall.  Now let me start by reminding you that even though this chow hall feeds like a Luby's and has the snacks and drink selection of a small convenient store, this is still a combat zone and
 most of the food is actually pre-cooked (kinda like a high speed MRE).  On most days, I only eat 2 meals a day, since my work schedule has me sleeping through breakfast and I work out during mid-rats (or Midnight rations).  So when I eat, I eat a lot to make up for the 18 hours in between dinner and lunch.  So with that being said, here are all of the pictures:

Fridays is steak night.  Yes, they repeat the menu every week, so although there is some variety, every Monday is the same through Sunday.  The only ones that I really remember are Wednesday (Mexican) and Friday (Steak, Crab Legs and Shrimp).  I usually save the ice cream and cake for Tuesday's and Thursdays, when I stick with Chicken breast, rice and salad.  As you can imagine, there are a few folks that look like Jackson did when he was a toddler.  Well that's all for this week.  We have the elections on Saturday and people are still up in arms over the threat of an American burning the Quran, so it should make for a fireworks filled weekend.  Till next week.

So Busy....

This has been such a busy week.
Between school, unexpected dentist visits, the little ones' first stay at the CDC, and on and on...I haven't had a chance to even think about what to post. I feel too guilty having two back to back "Wednesdays with Wade", so here are some pictures from during the week...
I want to thank the babies for stealing my camera...otherwise I wouldn't even have half of these to share!!

Wednesdays with Wade "Week 4 in Kabul"

Another week has passed in Kabul. This week I am going to highlight the gym. As you can see, I have a cardio tent and a weight lifting tent. I have set my goals high, since it appears that I will have a schedule that will allow consistancy in working out. My goal is that by the time I leave here, I will be in better shape at age 41, than I was at 21. Sounds hard, but considering that I used to smoke a pack a day and did some drinking when I was 21, it shouldn't be that hard. Of course, I used to bench press 300 pounds, so it looks like I will have muscles when I get home, which I am sure will impress my boys.
Next week, I will show you the chow hall and all of the awesome food that I am tempted with every day. After seeing the food, you will understand why I have to workout 2 hours per day.

Two Days Ago....

Hmm, that's weird... There's no light coming through the peep hole.

"What is that?"
(walking closer)

Oh, it's just a lego guy.
(walk away)

... and I'm laughing as I post it here because I just walked by the door, and the minifig is STILL there!
Is this "normal" in your home?
Or is just in homes with boys??
